    The Sonatas and Interludes are about as ideal you can get in 20th century music the audacity of using prepared piano is still not rivalled, even if you consider the innovations of electric guitar or synthesizer. Cage obviously accessed a deeper level of composition when he put this piece together.5/5(1).

    The "Sonatas and Interludes", which make up a big part of Cage's prepared piano work, are not grand sonatas in the tradition of Beethoven or Brahms, which seem to go on for days, but more after the fashion of the keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti -- single movements, in binary or rudimentary sonata-allegro form.4/5(18).

    Lasting over 70 minutes and made up of 16 sonatas and four interludes, John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes is his most substantial work for his invention, the prepared piano. Completed in March of , the work is dedicated to Maro Ajemian, who premiered it in New York City at Carnegie Hall on January 11, Students of music history have probably seen photographs of pianos fitted by Cage.
